Über das Werk
Siegward Sprotte studied at Berlin's Academy of Art under Emil Orlik and Kurt Wehlte, and later attended master classes held by the landscape painter Karl Hagemeister.
Initially Sprotte painted figuratively, and only subsequently came to develop his own language of form when he turned to painting landscapes and flowers. His abstract calligraphy was executed with great artistry, forming part of a body of work which also encompassed watercolour, drawings and oil paintings.
In the 1980s he fashioned richly-coloured expressive oil paintings in which he explored his immediate environs (his garden and the Isle of Sylt). The painting "Lupines and Daisies" also dates from this period.
