Über das Werk

As a child Christian Rohlfs fell from a tree, injuring his knee, which over the course of the following years became so bad that eventually his right leg had to amputated at the age of 24. Confined to bed for long periods due to his injury, this son of a Holstein farmer drew extensively in his childhood and in 1870 commenced his art studies at the Grand Ducal Art Academy in Weimar. Initially Christian Rohlfs painted in the naturalistic tradition of the Weimar academy, before turning to Impressionism in the 1880s. In 1905 he made the acquaintance of Emil Nolde in Soest, from which time on he began to cultivate the expressive style characterising his later works . In Rohlfs' "Homage" the focus is on the harmony of the sparkling colours in the foreground, with the pictorial motif dissolving into indistinctiveness. The powerful colour of the forms overcomes the figuration to create a rhythmical and cohesive composition. The trio of figures in the centre of the canvas are afforded greater emphasis by the luminous red, and one can only surmise that the focal point of the representation is the adumbrated form of a baby in old woman's lap. Colour, form and lines liberate themselves from the motif, creating an almost abstract composition, which evokes a mood of joyous solemnity.
