Über das Werk
The pre-dominant theme in the art of Heinz Mack is the representation of light energy. "Light is a life force", explains the philosopher, sculptor and painter, whose light-art works and monumental sculptures have garnered worldwide acclaim. In his pastel works, the co-founder of the ZERO artist movement shrouds light within a vestment of colour. Heinz Mack renders light visible through his application of a range of diverse colours, which are perceptible to the human eye. Thus light appears not only as one colour - but instead emphasises the immateriality of light through the expressivity of colour itself. To generate a rhythmic structure during execution, the paint is applied onto a wooden relief-like substrate. In his works colour transmutes into light and light into colour. By virtue of the pure colour pigments which Mack almost invariably uses in his pastel works, these light values attain a luminous intensity.
