Über das Werk
Emerging from narrow orange and yellow coloured stripes in a variety of coloured sequences is a powerful blue - a blue which appears to be suffused with light. By virtue of the pastel chalk applied, the colours take on a lucid materiality and luminous quality. Yet, at the same time, the individual sequences of colour are subject to the constraints of their own dynamic structure, thus only reinforcing this visual effect. In addition, the artist forges a virtual coloured space through his rhythmic application of paint, in which the colour appears to successively propagate.
As no other German artist in the 20th and 21st centuries, Heinz Mack succeeds in representing light as colour or colour as light, and, in so doing, defies the immateriality of light itself. In this sheet, the colours assume a concrete and quite singular manifestation. The tonalities of blue radiate an intensive autonomous presence - with both light and colour rendered experiential as colour itself.
