Über das Werk
Like a comet, the black burn mark "Blacks" soars through the blazing-red pictorial space, drawing in its wake a plume of smoke and soot. Otto Piene's colours flow, burn, soot and combust. The artist initiates an elementary process, generating crusts, bubbles and cracks, which dissipate into delicate ephemeral traces as they emerge from the cauldron of heat and energy.
Since the late 1950s, smoke and fire have been an integral part of Otto Piene's tool kit, with red and black serving as the symbolic colours of his "fire pictures". Piene's artistic sculpting of light and darkness and his application of fire as a source of energy, are predicated his conviction that art, nature and technology form an entity.
