Über das Werk
Starting with the colours of the rainbow, Heinz Mack juxtaposes the individual tone values in his "colour chromatics" in such a way as to generate rhythmic intervals of colour. Due to the additional intensive interior drawing which extends to edges of the colour zones, the surface erupts into flurry of a colour-light oscillations. Mack perceived colour as the expression of materialised light. As early as 1958, he once remarked: "For me motion is the actual form of an painting."
The fascination of this work "Untitled" from 2012 lies in its rich coloration. By virtue of the interior grid-like structure the colour appears to leap off the sheet - towards the viewer. The combination of the various red, orange and violet tones produces a state of acute optical confusion. Heinz Mack has succeeded not only in elevating the perception of colour to a haptic experience, but also in luring us into a radiant, light-filled space.
